One-way ticket

This creative research is a collaborative and experimental project created by the fashion designer and photographer Icía Vázquez and the choreographer and filmmaker ChienYing Wang for the Mixtures Artistic Creation Program commissioned by the Consulate General of Spain in New York. Chien-Ying’s choreography, 7456 Miles Journey is a sequel to her most recent work, Minor Feelings. It strives to bring light in connection to immigrant identities, race, gender, ethnicity, and multiculturalism. The choreographer wants to bring stories of long voyages into kinesthetic expressions of being a minority in this new land. In Wang’s own words, “As a person of color, Asian immigrant, and woman, many things weigh on me in this present era. The primary focus of this work is to shine a light on the experiences of immigrants in this country, particularly those of women and children.” Icía's artwork One-way ticket consists of printed cyanotypes of memories and valuable objects which were incorporated into the dance and referenced the immigration process of both artists. Icía’s experience is more recent and rooted in the search for a community that embraces her culture and queer identity. For the artist, working on this project has been very similar to her reality. In her own words, “One way trip with no end date, this unknown land will become my home and unknown faces will become my community. A mixture of excitement, nostalgia, and immigration forms fill the suitcase that will be my companion while crossing the ocean. Memories and feelings get lost in waves of cyan. From this side of the Atlantic, blue memories find themselves again. Sun printed images, whose vivacity slowly fades, cover my body and turn into a protective layer that reminds me of home.’’
